On October 19, 2023 the U.S. State Department issued a Worldwide Caution in response to increased tensions in various locations around the world.  This announcement indicates that U.S. Citizens should exercise increased caution by staying alert in tourist areas, enrolling in the STEP program, and following the Department of State social media outlets.

We understand that the violence in the Middle East related to the Israel-Hamas conflict is no doubt causing concern, and we want to assure you that student safety and well-being is our utmost priority. Please know that no one in the Arcadia Abroad community is alone.

Arcadia is monitoring the situation carefully through the Department of State and other government agencies, local staff, and private security firms. We have emergency plans and protocols and clear steps in place to reduce risk of incidents abroad as well as measures in place to address incidents that do arise. We follow recommendations regarding travel from DOS/official sources. At this time, they have not issued any restrictions regarding travel based on worldwide caution.

For students/parents concerned about something they’ve read/seen online or about undertaking independent travel:

  • We encourage students/parents to use credible sources (such as DOS) and in-country news sources for information and to avoid news sources / social media that are overly sensationalized.
  • Contact International SOS, our medical and security assistance partner, for updated security advice at the destination. Information on how to call ISOS can be found here

If students are experiencing distress or are looking for support, there are resources to help. Students are able to:

  • Call International SOS to request routine therapy or to access 24/7 crisis counseling.
  • Contact local staff to discuss support options available in your host country.

We will continue to support students and remind them of the key role they must play in ensuring their own personal safety.  Our recommendations include:

  • Remaining vigilant/alert and using common sense
  • Always carry a functioning phone, share phone numbers with us, and respond to messages from Arcadia, etc.
  • Avoid protests and demonstrations
  • Register weekend travel with staff
  • STEP enrollment for individual trips outside of host country is strongly encouraged

Arcadia Abroad expresses our condolences and solace for all affected by this violence. We will continue to monitor the situation and maintain constant communication with our on-site staff, local authorities, and relevant organizations. Updates will be shared in a timely manner directly with students. We encourage students to take personal responsibility for their well-being. We strongly recommend that they follow the guidance of local authorities, avoid areas of unrest, and stay informed through reliable news sources. We will remain vigilant in our efforts to ensure a secure and positive study abroad experience for all.

Sincerely,
