The College of Global Studies mourns the loss of Carmelle LeVin, founding and long-time Director of Arcadia University's programs in Australia, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 22, 2015.
Carmelle served as Director of the Australia programs from their inception in the mid-nineties until her retirement December 2013. Speaking of those early days, Vice President Lorna Stern recalls: “I first remember meeting Carmelle at a conference – she was so unique and unforgettable that, when Arcadia was starting in Australia, we hired her. And so the ‘dreamtime’ in Australia began with some of the most substantive and delightful orientations at Carmelle's ranch on the Mornington Peninsula – complete with home-cooked breakfasts, teepees that housed a dozen students per teepee on her lawns, the feeding of her alpacas, and many other personalized features that gave our students a dynamic introduction to this fascinating country.”
Carmelle’s family, colleagues and friends plan to celebrate her life with a memorial service filled with music, memories, tributes, flowers and a high tea, in a manner commemorating Carmelle’s beautiful spirit.
The entire Arcadia family is deeply grateful for the foundation of the work that Carmelle began and developed in Australia, for her blithe and indomitable spirit, for her deep love and understanding of Australian culture, and for her dedication and commitment to her students. She served as a mentor and a continual inspiration to her many colleagues throughout the world.
The College of Global Studies sends condolences to Carmelle's family and friends at this difficult time. Together, we grieve the passing of another 'legacy' in the field of international education – an incomparable educator who loved life, her students, her colleagues and her country.
