The Diversity Abroad Annual Conference kicks off on 14 March 2020 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and we are excited to participate with and learn from the over 700 education professionals, student leaders and employers who will be there.
This year’s theme is Amplifying Voices: Moving from Rhetoric to Systemic Change, and it will also include the Global Student Leadership Summit and the Strategic Leadership Forum.
There are many exciting sessions on the schedule. This year, our resident director in South Africa, Dr. Brittani Smit, will present on March 16 during the 10:30am-11:30 am slot. Her session is titled: Pursuing Reciprocity: Ethical Engagement with Global Partners.
In this session, examples of decolonized programming that amplifies indigenous voices and engages reciprocally with marginalized communities will be presented, along with suggestions for reframing the marketing of locations that are posited as "developing" relative to so-called "developed" countries. This approach to decolonizing international education equips students to truly be ethical global citizens and incorporates stakeholders both in the US and abroad in the process.
Brittany Emswiler, Assistant Director for Strategic Planning and Analytics, will also attend, along with Ashley Knueppel, Office of Study Away advisor, Arcadia University.
