Over the weekend of February 25-28, students on Arcadia programs in England, Scotland and Ireland gathered in Dublin to commemorate and learn about Ireland's 1916 Easter Uprising, 100 years later. The weekend went well, and Tom Kelley, Resident Director for Ireland, wrote an in depth account of it on the Arcadia Dublin Blog. Emma Grant, Student Life Assistant at the London Center, also wrote a post for the Arcadia London Blog about the weekend from the perspective of students in England who attended.
Activities included a welcome dinner, a play at the world renowned Abbey Theatre, guided and walking tours of historically relevant locations and lectures from speakers such as Dr. Mary McAuliffe from University College Dublin.
A commemorative event like this fits very well with the current Life of the Mind theme, 'Protest!.' This co-curricular weekend hosted in Dublin for students across Great Britain and Ireland was meant to inspire critical reflection and examination on these themes. Morgan Daniels, an Arcadia faculty member in London, wrote a piece that explains the Easter Rising and what it means both then and now for the Arcadia London Blog.
