The College of Global Studies organized the 3rd annual STEM Research Symposium with the  University of Michigan’s Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS) within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The purpose of this event was to highlight Michigan students who were exemplary in their research work while participating in one of our eight STEM summer research programs

This event is attended by students, staff, and faculty at UM. This event was organized by our very own Kelly Lampe, associate director for institutional relations, Dr. Jessie Guinn, assistant dean of STEM, and at the University of Michigan by Sarah Pauling, senior intercultural programs advisor, and Stephen Gonzalez, communications specialist. Sarah opened the event with a welcome and overview of CGIS before turning it over to Jessie to give remarks about the high-impact practice of studying STEM abroad, our opportunities in the sciences and engineering, and the associated services and support that we provide. Jessie then introduced two of our alumni students, Loren Thomas and Lizbeth Gonzales, who were the focus of the event.

Loren participated in our program in Dublin at the University College Dublin. Her research project was in chemistry and was entitled “Use of non-natural amino acids to investigate proteins structure-function relationships” under the direction of Dr. Marina Rubini. She mentioned in her remarks that she learned a great deal about research and that it has influenced her to pursue a career away from the bench in science to directly improve the lives of others.

Lizbeth participated in our program in London at the Royal Veterinary College. She undertook a cancer biology focused research project entitled “Does hypoxia trigger cancer cell transdifferentiation in some glioblastoma cells?” under the direction of Dr. Tej Dhoot. Lizbeth shared that her research experience in London has further supported her decision to pursue research after completing her undergraduate studies at UM.

The event was concluded with recognizing both Loren and Lizbeth with The College’s International STEM Research Achievement Award and a couple pieces of professional Arcadia swag.
