G'day readers!

Embarking on a journey to the land of kangaroos, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant multicultural atmosphere isn't just reserved for adventure seekers; it's becoming an increasingly popular destination for students seeking enriching internship experiences. In our blog, "Down Under Insights," we dive into the captivating narratives of students who have seized the opportunity to broaden their horizons through internships in Australia.

CONNOR WHYNOTT

"Over the past four months, I had the privilege of partaking in an internship set up by the Arcadia Abroad program in Sydney, Australia. After finding the program through Arcadia Abroad’s website, I indicated my interest in computer science. I was placed to intern at Ezerus, a software and digital marketing agency in North Sydney. During my time there, I completed a wide variety of tasks, from website speed optimization to SEO analysis. I had the opportunity to acquire not just technical skills, but professional skills as well. I learned about the ins and outs of running a company, what it’s like working with major clients, and the Australian work culture. I hope to use the knowledge that I have acquired during my internship and apply it to my future endeavors. I absolutely recommend other students to consider the internship program. Whether you want it for your resume or simply to immerse yourself in a different aspect of Australian culture, it is an incredible experience"

"I’d been thinking of getting an internship while in Sydney so I was super excited to hear Arcadia offered them. I was placed with The Big Issue, which is a street magazine that helps homeless/marginalised people (vendors) make an income and develop their confidence/self-efficacy. I had no idea what to expect since I’d never worked for a magazine company or with the homeless population. The past few months working here has deeply shifted my worldview—I made so many friends with the vendors and we’ve engaged in amazing conversations about anything and everything. Seeing how a lack of mental healthcare has impacted their lives only solidified my passion in becoming a psychotherapist when I “grow up”. I learned so much in terms of communication skills & event coordination, but I’m also endlessly grateful for everything I learned by working so closely with the vendors. They have so much wisdom about life & existence to share. I definitely recommend anybody interested in psychology, social justice, or journalism to intern at The Big Issue!"

"Upon deciding to study abroad in Sydney, I decided I wanted to intern in my time here in order to get a taste for an international workplace. I learned about this opportunity through my prior research of the University of Sydney program through Arcadia’s portal and immediately knew it was what I wanted. I interned for JudoNSW, a nonprofit company that organizes JudoNSW events and regulates its members in different clubs all across New South Wales. I was mostly responsible for creating data reports and visualizations to give JudoNSW different insights on how to approach new and existing membership across its clubs. I’m hoping to work in a data science related field in the future, so this internship gave me an excellent introduction to what this looks like in the working world through real-world data. My advice to any other students debating on whether to work an internship abroad is to be open to it. Not only does an international internship in a field similar to your major look great on your résumé since not many students have the opportunity to complete one, but you will gain invaluable experience that will inevitably shape your future career path in an amazing way!"
