Our final Talk of the Town! event of the semester was a fantastic conclusion to the series. Andrew Faas, our Assistant Director of Academic Affairs, has shared his thoughts on the discussion.
We wrapped up the fall semester's Talk of the Town series on a great note on 18th November with acclaimed journalist and novelist, Alix Christie. Alix led the group though a fantastic historical journey, talking about her new book Gutenberg's Apprentice. The book dramatises the life of the famous inventor who forever changed our ways of communication. Alix's narrative also pays special attention to the unsung supporting characters involved with the publication of the Gutenberg Bible and the technological innovation employed. All were treated to new perspectives on this key development in history, set against a presentation of beautiful examples of surviving texts.
The Sunday Time described it as ‘A sophisticated, moving story of the creation of the Gutenberg Bible’, while the Washington Post declared it ‘a worthy tribute to the technological revolution it re-imagines’. I believe that all in the packed function room at The Perseverance Pub agreed wholeheartedly!
Thanks to all who were able to make it to any of this semester's series. Your comments and questions inspired thought in all of us and demonstrated your fantastic curiosity and enthusiasm. I hope that you all found it to be an enlightening way to spend an evening in a particularly charming setting. For those who fortunate to be with us next semester as well, please do come along to the next series. Details will be posted in January.
