Contemporary portrait paintings created by entrants in the 34th year of the competition. The most prestigious painting competition in the world offers a first price of £30,000 and is aimed at encouraging artists to focus and develop portraiture in their work.

Exhibition marking 100 years since Gill’s death about how a son of an Aberdeen watchmaker grew up to become the foremost practical astronomer of his age.
The Amateur Eye: Photographs of 1930s Aberdeen: Throughout the End of January, Aberdeen Maritime Museum
Previously unseen photographs taken by chemistry teacher and talented amateur photographer, Martin F Bailey, around Aberdeen in the 1930s.
HMT Tours: 25 January, His Majesty's Theatre, 10.30am
Volunteer ushers lead tours of His Majesty's Theatre, exploring the architecture and the spooky history of the venue. Tours last approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
The Plooman Poet: The Real Burns as Told by His Droothie Cronie, Souter Johnnie: 28-30 January, Aberdeen Arts Center, 7.30-9pm
A unique perspective on the life and times of Robert Burns as seen through the eyes of one of his most famous creations, Souter Johnnie. This small cast, multimedia production explores Burns' poetry, including many lesser-known works, while incorporating biographical insights and storytelling in a unique and compelling performance which includes audience interaction and is suitable for the whole family. This production gives audiences the opportunity to hear the poems and lyrics of Scotland's favorite son performed in the manner in which they were intended.
