Glasgow 2014: The Environmental Legacy and XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow: Throughout the Beginning of June, The Lighthouse

A six-month programme of exhibitions, talks and activities, looking at how the 2014 Commonwealth Games will affect the environment, celebrating the projects being delivered by Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Parliament, the Games Organizing Committee and others.

Galloway in Glasgow--The Galloway Artisans Selling Exhibition: Beginning 8 June, The Mackintosh Church

A hand-picked selection of Galloway artists' works, including ceramics, oils, watercolors, prints and textiles.

Rachel Maclean: Happy&Glorious: Throughout the Beginning of June, CCA

New video work from the Glasgow-based artist, exploring themes thrown up by the Commonwealth Games, and featuring her Margaret Tait Award-winning exploration of British identity in the post-imperial age (featuring lots of green screen and a cheap plastic lion mask), A Whole New World.

Rags to Riches: A New Place to Sit: Beginning 9 June, Govanhills Baths

Create a small piece of furniture at these up-cycling workshops, which are themed around the experiences of refugees and what it means to be a refugee.

Scottish Gold: Throughout the Beginning of June, Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery

A major new exhibition looking at Scottish gold and gold mining, bringing together gold nuggets and examples of the worked metal, from torcs found at Law Farm in Moray in 1857 to Scottish coinage, medals and racing cups.

Starter for Six: Maker or Manufacturer: Through 8 June, The Lighthouse

A consideration of developments in Scottish design, asking whether Scottish designers regard themselves as makers or as manufacturers. Exhibitors include Andy Murray Design, Scott Jarvie Design, Pea Cooper Millinery and Jane North Jewellery.

Building a Legacy: The Athlete's Village:Throughout the Beginning of June

A showcase for one of the most lasting legacies of the 2014 Commonwealth Games: the Athletes' Village, built in the East End of the city and featuring 700 sustainable Eco-homes and a 120-bed care home.

Jim Dunn: Just Another Day: Throughout the Beginning of June, St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art

Photographs reflecting the diversity of religious life in 21st century Glasgow.

Music, Comedy and Dance

Ceilidh Dance Classes: 4 and 11 June, St Andrews in the Square, 7.15pm

Tricia Matthews leads these ceilidh dance classes.

Dougie MacLean: 7 June, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 6.30pm

Scotland's foremost folk/roots troubadour, renowned for his meaningful, haunting music.

Cottier Chamber Project: Beginning 8 June, Various Venues and Times

Now in its fourth year, the Cottier Chamber Project is a lively, genre-hopping festival unto itself in the wider orbit of Glasgow's West End Festival. Hosted by the enterprising chamber group Daniel's Beard, it brings top-flight professional chamber musicians to the West End and promotes chamber music, jazz, nu-folk and world music to Glasgow audiences. Among the musicians confirmed for 2014 are Red Note Ensemble, the Edinburgh Quartet, Alasdair Beatson, the James Brothers, Alastair Savage Trio, Concerto Caledonia, Moishe's Bagel and musicians from the RSNO and SCO.

Stringed Instrument Concert: 12 June, Glasgow Clyde College, 12pm

The musical instrument making course at Glasgow Clyde College in a concert in which instruments made by students will be played by professionals.

BBC SSO: Modern Times: 12 June, City Halls, 7.30pm

Charlie Chaplin's 1936 classic features Chaplin's own score, as personally hummed by him to a professional orchestrator, played live here by the BBC SSO. It's been restored and is conducted by Timothy Brock; among its pleasures are the tune that would later become Chaplin's only hit song, 'Smile'.

Songs for a Summer's Night: 13 June, Kibble Palace, 7.30pm

Glasgow Lyric Choir in a programme of Pergolesi, Passereau and folk songs from around the world in the beautiful Kibble Palace.

West End Festival: Throughout the Beginning of June, Various Venues and times

Taking over the West End of Glasgow each year, the festival treats the ears to a great musical line-up, tantalizes all the senses with a carnival and delves into the creative depths of local studios and exhibitions with the Hidden Lane open days.

A national celebration counting down to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Culture 2014 will showcase dance, theater, music, visual arts, comedy and so much more in the run up to the Games. Everyone’s invited!
