Atelier Public #2: Throughout the Beginning of May, Gallery of Modern Art

Work from Modern Edinburgh Film School, Emma Balkind, Brian Hartley and Anthony Schrag, exploring ideas of play, participation, democracy and the public space.

My Place Photography Awards and Scottish Civic Trust Awards: Through 4 May, The Lighthouse

Exhibitions exploring places in Scotland as seen through the eyes of local people, and also people and organizations who are champions of local design and conservation.

Taster Sessions in Scottish Gaelic: 15 May, Govanhill Baths, 7pm

Do you fancy learning Scottish Gaelic? This workshop will introduce you to the language and provide you with a variety of Gaelic phrases in a relaxed and informal setting. Made possible by support from Colmcille.

Badges of Honour: Throughout the Beginning of May, Glasgow Women's Library

An exhibition of women's badges, from suffragette brooches to Pride pins and dancing medals, with the stories that accompany them.

Starter for Six: Maker of Manufacturer?: Throughout the Beginning of May, The Lighthouse

A consideration of developments in Scottish design, asking whether Scottish designers regard themselves as makers or as manufacturers. Exhibitors include Andy Murray Design, Scott Jarvie Design, Pea Cooper Millinery and Jane North Jewellery.

Art on the Hill: Beginning 9 May, Church on the Hill

Art on the Hill is a group showcase of Glasgow's fine artistic talent. Running for the month of May upstairs in Church On The Hill, the exhibit will cover a diverse range of practices from painting, sculpture, photography and audio visual works.

Ubiquitous Chip Whiskey Club: 1 May, Ubiquitous Chip, 6pm

To celebrate Whiskey Month, the Chip launches its own whiskey club, exploring different regions of the country each time, with four drams plus nibbles to match.

Whiskey Pairing and Piping: 1, 8 and 15 May, The National Piping Centre, 7pm

Explore the connections between Scottish food, drink and music for Whiskey Month.

Picturing Venus: Throughout the Beginning of May, Hunterian Museum & Art Gallery

Engravings of Venus from the Hunterian's collection, a dazzling selection of Renaissance representations of the goddess of love.

Ralph McTell: 3 May, SECC, 8pm

Folk singer-songwriter, famed for the Ivor Novello Award winning song The Streets of London.

Uncle Varick: 4 May, Eastwood Park Theatre, 7.30pm

A play where 60s London collides with remote Scotland.

Rant: 7 May, St Andrews in the Square, 7.30pm

Four of Scotland's finest fiddle players (Bethany Reid, Jenna Reid, Sarah-Jane Summers and Lauren MacColl) come together for a night of vibrant, evocative of the exciting folk.

Jock'n'Roll: Through 10 May, Pavilion Theatre, 2pm or 7.30pm

Twenty singers and musicians play over 50 Scottish classics for a big singalong featuring ‘My Old Man’s a Dustman’, ‘Tiny Bubbles’, ‘Flower of Scotland’, ‘Delilah’, ‘Shang-a-Lang’,’ 500 Miles’, ‘Shout’, ’ Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep’ and many more.

String Driven Thing: 11 May, Burrell Collection, 5pm

String Driven Thing are a folk rock band from Scotland, originally formed in the 1960s and led by husband and wife Chris Adams and Pauline Adams and featuring the electric violin of Graham Smith. This is a rare chance to see them up close & personal!

Southside Fringe: 9-25 May, Various Venues and Times

Here at the Southside Fringe Festival we are passionate about our community and we co-ordinate events and venues to provide a fortnight of quality opportunities for acts, performers and musicians. We hope over the years to involve as many local venues and businesses as we can with a view to boosting existing custom over the fortnight and to raise the profile of the Southside on the arts landscape and draw new customers, visitors and audiences to the wonderful facilities the Southside has to offer.
