It's that time of year again! With the Edinburgh Centre ready to welcome new students to Scotland, and knowing that finding your feet in a new city can be difficult, we thought we'd share some suggestions of where to start exploring! 

From markets that have a variety of locally sourced foods and crafts to theatres and pubs, here are a few events and activities that we think will be fun ways for you to get to know your new home.

Edinburgh

Farmer’s Market

Castle Terrace, Every Saturday 9am-2pm.

Explore a range of stalls with fresh produce, handcrafted items, and locally brewed delights. 

Dean Village and the Waters of Leith

Take a stroll along the Waters of Leith to Dean Village for a different side of Edinburgh. Dean Village is often referred to as one of the most picturesque parts of the city. 

A, Play, A Pie, and A Pint

Tues – Sat at 1pm and Fridays at 7pm.

Take in a bit of a theatre over lunch at the Traverse Theatre.

Glasgow

Farmer’s Market

Partick, Mansfield Park: Every 2nd and 4th Saturday of month, 10am – 2pm.

Try a range of locally produced food and goods. 

Ashton Lane

Charming lane tucked away near the University of Glasgow with restaurants, pubs, and a cinema. 

Britannia Panopticon

The oldest surviving Music Hall with a range of weekly and monthly events, including silent movies with live music and theatre performances. September events include: Music Hall Memories, September 29 (Shows at 1:30 and 3:30) and Charles Rennie Mackintosh: Life and Legend (September 20-22 at 7:30, 23 at 3).

St Andrews

Farmer’s Market

Argyle St Car Park, 1st Saturday of the Month (February to December), 10am-4pm.

Experience the range of products on offer, produced throughout Fife.

The Byre Theatre

Hosts a range of activities, from film screenings to theatre performances. September Highlights include: Scottish Chamber Orchestra Nielsen Clarinet Concerto (September 13 at 7:30) and a screening of King Lear from the National Theatre, starring Ian McKellan (September 27 at 7).

Stirling

Farmer’s Market

Market Square, 2nd Saturday, 9am-1pm.

Explore the best that Stirling has to offer in local produce and goods. 

Living History Weekends at The Battle of Bannockburn Centre

Every Saturday and Sunday in September, 12-4.

Try your hand at living in the Middle Ages. 

Nicky-Tams

Local hang-out spot with pub quizzes on every Sunday and jam nights every Wednesday.
