The Catalan Rumba is a genre of music that originated in the 50s in Barcelona, among the gypsy communities of the neighborhoods of Gràcia, Hostafrancs and part of the Raval. Its sounds might remind you of the Spanish Flamenco Rumba because, in fact, this genre derives from it. It’s also noticeable that the Catalan Rumba has Cuban music and rock and roll influences.
Nowadays we listen to and dance at this type of music in many festivities as its typically vibrant sounds (Spanish guitars, hand claps, bongos, güiros, and mostly percussion instruments) make very catchy and lively songs. You just want to dance at those songs and you just can’t help it!
Yesterday we had a great time with our Spring students learning some new dance moves at the Rumba Catalana Workshop. Last Fall we also went to the Rumba Workshop with our students and they also enjoyed the class very much. It's always so much fun to dance at the cheerful Catalan Rumba sounds with locals, and our students always prove to be great dancers!
We've been so lucky to have the chance to learn how to dance Catalan Rumba with an amazing teacher who made all of us go through the choreography! A very nice experience and new dance moves to show off!
