Next week, on the 23rd of April in Catalonia is Sant Jordi’s day, an important and magical day for all catalans because he is the patron of Catalonia and also from England.
This is an old and beautiful tradition that started many centuries ago, some people say chivalry words and the courtesy love may have been the beginning of this legend.
It's when lovers give a present to each other, a rose or a book depending on if you are a female or a male, and it is a symbol/tradition from Saint George’s Day.
For Catalans, it's a great day; it's almost the most important day of the year, there is a party on the streets, full of people walking and looking at the beautiful stands with flowers, seeing all the little shops with their books. Also, many writers show their works on the street for the public! You can see flowers and books all around the cities, towns, little villages and a lot of Catalonia flags as well, as a symbol of identity because this day has become an important day. A day full of culture, love, books and roses.
Sadly, this year we are not allowed to be on the streets, the government is thinking about changing the date to July so we can do the typical celebration, but meanwhile we can`t pass up the day and we must celebrate in a different way!
Casa Batlló, one of the most iconic buildings built by Gaudi that always has a relevant role in this event every year by filling up all its balconies with roses, launched the #TotsFemSantJordi (we all do Saint George) initiative, inviting each house to fill their balconies with roses as they do every year!
Also, they have published this emotional video in which they narrate some of the most common moments among all of us that are at home and encourage decorating the balconies with roses.
How can we find ourselves without Sant Jordi, if we have more love than ever?
