As the seat of the Roman Empire and the birthplace of the Renaissance, few countries can boast such an impact on western civilization as Italy. It excites the senses on many levels: look out on the vistas of natural beauty from the icy reaches of the Alps to the sun-kissed beaches of the south and islands; smell the delicious aromas of exquisite pastry making or fresh pasta sauce on the stove; reach out and touch olive trees and vines that have nourished the people for centuries; and listen to evocative sounds of the busy Roman streets or voices of the past as you explore ancient ruins.
